All library branches will be closed for Anzac Day on the 25th April.

Here in the Hastings we have a rich heritage of newspapers with the oldest dating from 1882.

Currently there are two local papers, The Port Macquarie News and the Camden Haven Courier. A third newspaper, The Wauchope Gazette, was published from 1907 to 2019 and the library holds copy from 1920 to 2019.

Recent editions in hardcopy are available to view at each branch with microfilm copies of all editions available at the Port Macquarie Library,

The Port Macquarie-Hastings and Kempsey Shire Library Services have begun a program to digitize their newspaper holdings. Digital copies can be viewed at all branches.

The National Library of Australia has developed an online archive of Australian newspapers with coverage from the earliest papers through to 1954. This is an ongoing project and the Port Macquarie News has now been included covering the years 1882-1950 (as at January 2022).

Other local newspapers on TROVE that can be searched for local Hastings region content include:

  • The Wingham Chronicle and Manning River Observer (NSW : 1898 – 1954)
  • The Northern Champion (Taree, NSW : 1913 – 1954)
  • The Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser (NSW : 1843 – 1893)
