Please join us for a presentation by author and stroke survivor Thomas Graham at our Port Macquarie Library on Wednesday 29th July at 2.30pm.
Thomas is a retired Canberran, former small business owner and public servant, who unexpectedly suffered a stroke in 2023, losing mobility to his right sided limbs. As part of his rehabilitation process to restore his mobility, and return to active, independent living he wrote, Let’s go for a walk.
His book chronicles the intensive physiotherapy program to regain his physical movement, supplemented by writing poetry, gardening, walking and forest bathing to maintain his psychological wellbeing. His story navigating through a medical emergency, while supported by family and friends, offers encouragement to others struck by chronic illness, as well as those entrusted with their care.
Thomas is trained as a Stroke Safe Speaker by the Stroke Foundation, and will include a few universal health messages in his talk ie recognise the symptoms of stroke and get to hospital quickly if you experience the classic signs of a stroke.
Let’s go for a walk: Rebuilding body, mind and spirit after a stroke
When Thomas unexpectedly suffered a stroke, he faced loss of mobility to his right-sided limbs. Let’s go for a walk is his account of the rehabilitation process to restore his mobility and return to active, independent living. Through a program of intensive physiotherapy, Thomas worked to regain his physical movement, rebuild his strength, and enhance his stamina. He wrote poetry to support his psychological wellbeing and embraced nature-based activities-sit spotting, forest bathing, walking and gardening-for spiritual sustenance to nurture a greater appreciation for life.
His journey of navigating a medical emergency with resilience and positive intent, supported by close family and friends, offers encouragement and hope to stroke survivors, trauma sufferers, and those entrusted with their care.
Signed copies will be available for sale on the day.
