Join us for a captivating author talk with Maura Luxford who will be discussing her latest memoir, One White Post At A Time. At your Wauchope Library on Monday 2nd November at 10.30am.Â
Growing up in a family of nine children, she had the travelling stock routes of Victoria and New South Wales as her childhood playground, droving livestock with her parents, Marie and Kevin Luxford. Much of her primary schooling in the 1960s and 70s was by correspondence, with her mum as teacher. At fourteen, she was banished to the back of Bourke after getting booted out of one of the toughest schools in NSW. She finished Year 10 by correspondence while droving alone with her dad and 1,400 head of cattle. Twenty years later, proving it’s never too late, she graduated from university with a degree in Social Sciences.
Following the death of her eldest daughter, Hannah, aged 20, from melanoma, Maura founded the social enterprise ride4acure. Over the next five years, she undertook three extraordinary long-distance treks by bicycle and horses, raising awareness across five Australian states. Along the way, she shared Hannah’s story with more than 25,000 young people in rural and remote communities, raising over $150,000 for the Hannah Rose Melanoma Research Fund. Those journeys, and the extraordinary people she met along the way, became the inspiration for her memoirs, ride4acure: Origin Story (2024) and One White Post at a Time (2026).
These are stories of resilience, adventure, hope and the remarkable people she met along the way. She blends humour, heartfelt storytelling and practical insights about belonging, courage and finding purpose.
Maura lives on Dunghutti Country on the fertile acres of Euroka Creek, near Kempsey, New South Wales. When not writing, she grows food and flowers, plants habitat trees, watches birds while drinking copious amounts of tea, and goes on motorbike adventures whenever she can.
Morning tea will be provided.
