Please join us for a chat with local children’s author Wendy Haynes and illustrator Jemma Ortiger at Port Macquarie Library on Thursday 10th July at 10am.
Wendy Haynes has completed a Diploma in Creative Writing at Southern Cross University. Her writing focuses on middle-grade fantasy, historical, and contemporary stories for children, picture books, junior fiction, and YA. Playing in Puddles is her 2nd picture book and her 5th published children’s book.

Join Xavier and Zane as they JUMP, PLONK, SPLASH in puddles. It’s time to wriggle into your raincoat, tug on your boots, and head outdoors. Playing in Puddles is a playful, heartwarming, and visually appealing story, explore how making your own fun and imaginative play can bring you joy and friendship through sharing an experience together. Illustrator, Jemma Ortiger will be sharing how she collaborated closely with the author to bring the story to life, what inspires Jemma’s illustrations and artistic style used in the book and hidden details and fun visual surprises for kids. She will also be showing behind-the-scenes of the illustration process – from sketch to final artwork.
This is kids focused event. Books will be available to purchase on the day for $10.99 each. A colouring competition will also be running during the school holidays, with three copies of Playing in Puddles to be won. The competition opens on Saturday 5 July and closes 14 July and the 3 winners will be announced on Friday 18 July at 4pm at the library. Wendy was a judge for the Port Writer’s in-house competition for the creative non-fiction category in 2018, and one of the judges of the fiction category in 2019. She was one of the judges for the CYA Competition for 2019 and a is currently the President of Port Writers Incorporated. Wendy won first prize for her short story Going Nowhere, at Port Writers In-house competition 2018, and enjoys helping and motivating writers. She is available for school visits.
