Official Launch of Dancing in Fetters Exhibition & Convict Culture Week
We warmly invite you to join us on Monday, 27th October from 2:30 to 3:30 PM for the official launch of the Dancing in Fetters exhibition, held in conjunction with Convict Culture Week.
Enjoy a special introduction by Dr Heather Blasdale-Clarke, along with live music, song, and afternoon tea as we open this captivating exhibition exploring a little-known aspect of Australia’s convict past.
When we think of convicts, music and dancing rarely come to mind—yet they were vital parts of everyday life in the early colony. Dancing served as an escape from the hardship of penal life, creating moments of joy, cultural connection, and community. Even in Port Macquarie, a remote convict settlement from 1821 to 1832, there are glimpses of this lively, human side of history.
This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to experience these forgotten stories and reimagine our understanding of convict culture.
The Dancing in Fetters exhibition runs from Monday, 13th October to Saturday, 1st November.
