The role of the Justice of the Peace (JP) is to act as an independent and objective witness to documents people use for official or legal purposes. JPs can serve different roles in different jurisdictions.
Generally JPs:
- witness oaths or affidavits
- take statutory declarations and affirmations
- witness signatures
- attest the execution of a document
- certify a true copy of an original document
A free volunteer Justice of the Peace service operates from the libraries at the following times:
Port Macquarie Library | Saturdays: 10am-12noon Wednesdays: 12noon-2pm | 65818755 |
Laurieton Library | Wednesdays: 1pm-3pm | 65818177 |
Wauchope Library | Mondays: 11am-12noon | 65818162 |
The JP service doesn’t need an appointment.
The JPs would appreciate your patience and to allow enough time for them to witness your documents.
NSW JPs are not allowed to give legal advice. A JP may need to decline to witness or certify a document at their own discretion.
NSW JPs are unable to witness or certify any of the following:
• Proof of Life forms
• Enduring Powers of Attorney
• Laminated Citizenship certificates (we generally can certify copies of non-laminated Citizenship certificates)
Other JP services are also available at Port Panthers (6580 2300) or Settlement City (6583 7377). Contact them for available times.
The NSW Government provides an online service to find a Justice of the Peace from the public register.
