SUMMARY:Maura Luxford- Author talk - Stories behind the storyteller
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a captivating author talk with Maura Luxford who will be discussing her latest memoir\, One White Post At A Time. At your Wauchope Library on Monday 2nd November at 10.30am.  \nGrowing up in a family of nine children\, she had the travelling stock routes of Victoria and New South Wales as her childhood playground\, droving livestock with her parents\, Marie and Kevin Luxford. Much of her primary schooling in the 1960s and 70s was by correspondence\, with her mum as teacher. At fourteen\, she was banished to the back of Bourke after getting booted out of one of the toughest schools in NSW. She finished Year 10 by correspondence while droving alone with her dad and 1\,400 head of cattle. Twenty years later\, proving it’s never too late\, she graduated from university with a degree in Social Sciences. \nFollowing the death of her eldest daughter\, Hannah\, aged 20\, from melanoma\, Maura founded the social enterprise ride4acure. Over the next five years\, she undertook three extraordinary long-distance treks by bicycle and horses\, raising awareness across five Australian states. Along the way\, she shared Hannah’s story with more than 25\,000 young people in rural and remote communities\, raising over $150\,000 for the Hannah Rose Melanoma Research Fund. Those journeys\, and the extraordinary people she met along the way\, became the inspiration for her memoirs\, ride4acure: Origin Story (2024) and One White Post at a Time (2026). \nThese are stories of resilience\, adventure\, hope and the remarkable people she met along the way. She blends humour\, heartfelt storytelling and practical insights about belonging\, courage and finding purpose. \nMaura lives on Dunghutti Country on the fertile acres of Euroka Creek\, near Kempsey\, New South Wales. When not writing\, she grows food and flowers\, plants habitat trees\, watches birds while drinking copious amounts of tea\, and goes on motorbike adventures whenever she can. \nMorning tea will be provided.

SUMMARY:DONNA M MARTIN - Book Launch and talk - Stories behind the storyteller
DESCRIPTION:Please join Leanne for a chat with local author Donna M Martin and celebrate the launch of her debut fiction Flood and Tears on Thursday 5th November at 5.30pm.\nPLEASE NOTE NEW EVENT DATE \nDonna lives on the canals of Newport Island in Port Macquarie\, New South Wales\, Australia. When the devastating 2021 floods swept through northern New South Wales\, they reshaped not only the landscape but also her life\, ultimately sparking the story that became this book. The 100-year flood inundated her home and her neighbours’ homes.\nA former business owner with a lifelong love of reading\, Donna brought that same drive and instinct for storytelling to her debut novel. She tasted success when she placed runner-up in a short story competition in 2025. She has had numerous short stories published in writers’ magazines. The floods gave her the story she had to tell. Flood and Tears is the result.\nDonna is a dedicated member of her local book club. She is a member of the Fellowship of Australian Writers\, Port Macquarie Writers\, the Australian Crime Writers Association\, and the Australian Society of Authors. She understands firsthand the power of a good story to illuminate what we otherwise struggle to say. \nFLOOD AND TEARS\nIn March 2021\, a catastrophic flood tore through the northern NSW town of River Edge\, forcing neighbours to flee as rising water swept homes away. Tom and Henry\, cafe owners\, risked their lives to rescue Dick Phillips after he was badly injured escaping his submerged property. Neighbour Darren Short abandons his elderly father\, Ed\, after years of unreturned caregiving\, believing the disaster may finally free him from a life he never chose. When S.E.S. crews search the wreckage of Dick’s boat shed\, they uncover an overturned chest freezer. Fish spill out\, but beneath them lies the preserved body of Hillary Phillips\, Dick’s wife\, missing for six years and long presumed drowned. \nRachel Phillips returns home to visit her father in the hospital\, only to discover that her mother’s body has been found. She is forced to confront the father she once trusted and still loved. Detectives Steve Sansom and Nikki Ambrose determine that Hillary was murdered\, and their investigation soon reveals a second crime. A post‑hole digger bearing two sets of DNA\, linking the case to the suspicious death of Dick’s mother twenty‑five years earlier. That earlier death sent local man Jimmy Smith to prison\, a conviction long accepted as fact. Sansom and Ambrose dig deeper\, they join forces with retired police officer Bill Taylor and persistent local reporter Jan Stirling to challenge the original investigation and expose the truth hidden beneath decades of silence. Their work unravels a pattern of violence and control that Dick concealed behind a façade of community respectability. Ultimately\, Jimmy Smith is cleared\, and Dick Phillips gets a life sentence. As River Edge rebuilds after the flood\, the town must reckon with the secrets the waters unearthed and the lives forever changed by what finally came to the surface. Donna will have books to sell and sign at this launch.

SUMMARY:TANIA BLANCHARD - Author talk - Stories behind the storyteller
DESCRIPTION:Please join Leanne for a chat with popular historical fiction Tania Blanchard at your Port Macquarie Library on Friday 27th November at 2.30pm. \nTania Blanchard writes historical fiction inspired by the true stories and the rich cultural heritage of her family’s history. Her acclaimed stories of love\, loss and hope and the challenges facing women in defining moments in modern history span pivotal moments in time during great social and political upheaval\, and are beloved by readers everywhere. Her books The Girl from Munich\, Suitcase of Dreams\, Letters from Berlin\, Daughter of Calabria\, A Woman of Courage and An Undeniable Voice are all bestsellers. She lives in Sydney with her husband and three children. \nTHE PARIS PRIZE\nIn the rugged heart of sheep country\, a woman can dream … From the shearing sheds of the Great Dividing Range to the highlands of Scotland\, Maddy Rainforth is on a mission to make the finest Merino wool – and now the glittering catwalks of Paris are calling. But it will take much more than just a dream.\nGrazier Maddy Rainforth lives and breathes wool – and not just any wool\, the finest Merino wool that can be grown. Maddy dreams of a day when her golden fleece is the toast of the country\, but it’s going to take everything she and her family can offer – and sometimes a bit more\, when the country that gives so much bounty can also take it away.\nBattling the unforgiving elements takes her all – from devastating drought to deadly bushfires and suffocating dust storms and more – as well as the demands and heartbreak of war\, and the expectations of an industry run by men. Inspired by her family’s heritage\, Maddy travels to the highlands of the Scottish Isles to trace ancient techniques\, and begins to produce her own unique\, woollen fabric in colours drawn from the country around her. Soon Australia is riding high on a wool boom – and as haute couture in Europe rises from the ashes of war\, Maddy’s fleece and fabric is in demand. And now the prestigious Paris Wool Prize – which has launched the careers of the most famous designers in the fashion world – is knocking on Maddy’s door.\nBut Maddy’s journey is fraught with challenges – prejudice\, heartbreak\, and the ever-present threat of failure. For fans of The Dressmaker\, The Paris Seamstress and the The Woolgrowers Companion\, The Paris Prize is a rousing story of a woman who turned dust into Dior and the indomitable spirit that defines what it means to be Australian – one of love\, legacy\, obsession and passion.\nThe bookseller for this event will be Collins Booksellers\, Port Macquarie.
