Bookstart Program:

Bookstart - Reading for Life was launched in February 2006. Bookstart is a bag containing a quality board book and information on the importance of reading as well as library services information. The bags are being given to all new parents in the Port Macquarie-Hastings area to encourage reading from a young age.

Reading to a baby is important because it creates a special bonding time for parent and child and introduces baby to many experiences through stories, songs and rhymes.

Thanks to the Port Macquarie Friends of the Library, over 3,400 Bookstart bags have been distributed to mothers giving birth at Port Macquarie Base Hospital.

10 Minutes a Day Program:

The Ten Minutes a Day program provides practical ideas on using stories, rhymes, songs and music to help children under one year develop early literacy skills.

This structured program runs over 4 weeks with each session approximately half an hour.  There are up to 12 participants.  Bookings are required or call 6581 8755.  The next sessions will be at Port Macquarie Library on Friday 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th February 2012.

The 'Ten Minutes a Day' concept and program is made possible through the support of Newcastle Permanent Building Society's Charitable Foundation.

Ten Minutes a Day Baby Book Packs are available for loan at Port Macquarie-Hastings Libraries.  The pack include board books, a CD and nursery rhymes.  The packs have been carefully selected to suit the developmental needs of babies 2years and under.

We recently celebrated the first birthday of Ten Minutes a Day at our library and thanks to the onging support of the Newcastle Permanent Building Society, there are more Ten Minutes A Day Packs and more resources for Baby Book Time.

Parenting Collection:

At your local library you can access over 400 items including books, DVDs, magazines and other resources that may help you with your parenting.  Please ask for assistance and remember...if you can't find it...ask for it!  We welcome questions and suggestions.
